The permenant way is the basis of
a railway and it is critical that it is maintained properly. There are many
tasks that have to be undertaken throughout the year from clearing the drainage,
greasing the pointwork, greasing fishplates, spot sleeper replacements and
reballasting. The overall line and level of the track also has to be maintained
and this can be made much more difficult given a very hot summer. It is also
important to check that the line remains clear of obstructions throughout
the year.
